THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the primary psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Its molecular makeup consists of 21 carbon, 30 hydrogen, and 2 oxygen atoms. As a lipid-soluble cannabinoid, it binds to CB1 receptors in the brain’s endocannabinoid system, mimicking natural neurotransmitters to alter mood and perception. Beyond its recreational “high,” THC offers significant therapeutic benefits, including chronic pain relief, nausea reduction (particularly for chemotherapy patients), and appetite stimulation. It is most commonly found in marijuana flower, concentrated oils, resins, and infused edibles. While closely related to CBD, THC’s unique structure is what triggers its potent intoxicating effects.
